Korean Fortune Reading with ChatGPT: What It Actually Reads

By Saju Unni · Updated October 6, 2026 · 4 min read

A Korean saju reading is not a verdict about what is coming. It is a reading of eight characters produced by the calendar on the day you were born, and what it describes are tendencies: how you recharge, what you reach for under pressure, which kinds of people wear you out. ChatGPT can describe those tendencies well. What it cannot reliably do is work out the eight characters in the first place.

What the reading actually reads

Your birth year, month, day, and hour each become a pillar, and each pillar is two characters: a heavenly stem and an earthly branch. Eight characters total, which is why the full Korean name is saju palja, "four pillars, eight characters."

The characters themselves are plain arithmetic. There is no interpretation step in producing them and no room for opinion. The reading begins afterwards, with questions like these:

  • Which of the five elements does the chart have a lot of, and which is thin or missing?
  • Which stem sits in the day pillar? That one is the ilgan, the day master, and it is the reference point every other character is read against.
  • How do the pillars interact? Some pairs reinforce each other, some grind.

None of that is a statement about events. It is a description of a temperament and the conditions under which it does well, which is how most Koreans use it: as a vocabulary for talking about yourself, often over coffee, usually with some scepticism intact.

It is also worth separating saju from what K-dramas tend to show. The dramatic scene with the trance and the offerings is sinjeom, a shamanic practice. Saju is a table lookup. Any two readers with the same manseryeok calendar should produce the same eight characters for the same birth moment.

Where ChatGPT is good, and where it is not

Good: explaining what a day master is. Walking you through what a chart short on water tends to look like day to day. Rephrasing when the first answer went over your head. Answering the specific follow-up you thought of at 1am. This is squarely what a language model is for, and it is genuinely better at it than most articles.

Not good: the arithmetic. Three places in particular break:

  • The year pillar turns on Ipchun, the solar term that opens the saju year around February 3 or 4. The exact instant moves every year, down to the minute, so an early-February birth can sit on either side of it.
  • The month pillar turns on solar terms too, not on the first of the calendar month. Two people born the same civil date can hold different month pillars.
  • The hour pillar needs solar time at your birth place, which means unwinding the time zone, the longitude gap, and any daylight saving in force on that date. South Korea ran daylight saving in 1987 and 1988 only, and a chart that ignores it is an hour off.

A model answering from memory does not flag any of this. It returns a clean, confident chart, and you cannot see which Ipchun instant it used because it did not use one. We measured how often that goes wrong, case by case, in why ChatGPT gets your saju wrong.

The two-step that works

Split the job the way the job splits:

  1. Compute the chart with a calendar. Our free calculator does the solar-term and solar-time work and gives you the four pillars in a couple of seconds, no signup.
  2. Hand the pillars to the model and tell it not to recalculate. Then ask it anything. Our ChatGPT saju prompt page builds that prompt for you with your own characters already in it, and the exact prompt to paste walks through why each line of it is there.

Calculation stays rule-based. The conversation stays warm. Nobody is asking the model to be a calendar.

If you are coming from Chinese bazi

The pillar arithmetic is shared, so a bazi chart and a saju chart of the same birth agree on most of the eight characters. What differs is convention and vocabulary: the Korean practice uses the 23:00 day boundary and solar-time correction, and it talks about ilgan, ohaeng, and gunghap rather than their Mandarin equivalents. Saju vs bazi lays the two side by side, and what is saju is the place to start if the whole system is new.

FAQ

What is a Korean saju reading?
It is a reading of the eight characters produced by your birth year, month, day, and hour. The characters are fixed calendar math, and the reading describes the tendencies they suggest, which is why Koreans treat it as a personality frame rather than a verdict.
Can ChatGPT do a Korean saju reading?
It can explain a chart well. It is unreliable at building the chart, because the year and month pillars turn on solar-term instants and the hour pillar turns on solar time at the birth place. Supply the pillars and the reading gets much better.
Is saju the same as a Chinese bazi reading?
The pillar arithmetic is shared. Saju is the Korean tradition, with its own conventions such as the 23:00 day boundary and solar-time correction, and its own vocabulary of ilgan, ohaeng, and gunghap.
Is saju the same as the readings in K-dramas?
Usually not. On screen the dramatic scenes tend to show sinjeom, a shamanic practice. Saju is a calendar calculation done with a manseryeok table and needs no trance and no intermediary.
Is a saju reading free?
The chart is. Our calculator gives you the full four pillars, the day pillar card, and your five-element balance with no signup, and the in-depth personality report is a separate one-time digital download.
