You're in a Situationship. Here's Why It Won't Move.

By Saju Unni · Updated August 20, 2026 · 8 min read

There is someone who texts you all day and asks if you have eaten. Who acts like yours in private and goes vague the second a friend asks what you two are. You are not imagining the closeness, and you are not crazy for wanting a name for it. You are in a situationship, and the reason it will not move is more specific than "he is just not ready."

What a situationship actually is

A situationship is a romantic, usually physical relationship with no label, no agreed commitment, and no shared direction. It has the texture of dating without the frame of it. Nobody said out loud that this is a relationship, so nobody has to be responsible for where it goes.

That undefined state is not an accident of modern dating. It is doing a job for at least one person: it keeps the closeness without the cost of choosing.

The signs, so you can stop second-guessing

You usually already know. But if you want it laid out:

  • Plans are always last minute, never the calendar kind.
  • You have not met the people who matter to them, and they have not asked to meet yours.
  • Any "where is this going" conversation gets deflected, joked away, or met with "why do we need labels."
  • It feels like a relationship in private and evaporates in public.
  • When someone asks what you two are, you change the subject, because you genuinely do not have the sentence.

One or two of these can be early days. All of them, months in, is a pattern, not a phase.

Why it hurts more than it "should"

Here is the cruel part. The connection is real while the commitment is not, so when it ends, and undefined things usually do, you grieve something you were told did not count. No breakup to point to. No anniversary to delete. Just weeks or months of someone who behaved like yours, and a feeling you are not allowed to call heartbreak.

That is the invisible grief of a situationship, and naming it is the first thing that makes it lighter.

What the pull is made of

This is where a Korean saju reading has something specific to say, not about the future, but about the shape of the thing. Saju reads two people by lining up what each was born reaching for and what each was born holding back.

Situationships tend to sit on a particular kind of mismatch. One chart keeps asking for something the other chart is not built to hand over, at least not without a push, so the connection feels almost complete and never quite closes. The pull is genuine. The gap is also genuine. Both being true at once is exactly why it neither deepens nor dies, and why you keep circling back to see if this is the week it finally lands.

Seeing that gap on paper does something useful. It moves the story out of what is wrong with me that I accept this and into here is the specific place this connection keeps stalling. One of those questions keeps you stuck. The other one you can actually act on.

How to end it, or move it

The move is the same whether you want out or want more: end the ambiguity on purpose.

Say the plain sentence once. I like this, and I want to know if we are heading somewhere or not. Then listen to the shape of the answer, not just the words. A real reconsideration sounds different from another smooth deflection. If you get the deflection, that is the answer, and you already knew it before you asked.

Waiting rarely converts a situationship, because the person keeping it undefined is usually getting exactly what they want from undefined. What changes it is one of you refusing to treat "undefined" as a place you live.

See the gap for yourself

If you want to see the specific pull and gap between you and the person you cannot quite name, that is what a couple reading is for: two charts side by side, in the language of what one keeps reaching for and what the other keeps holding back. Or start with your own free chart and see what your side of the pattern is built from. Naming it is the part that finally lets it move.

FAQ

What is a situationship?
A situationship is a romantic and usually physical relationship that has no label, no defined commitment, and no shared direction. It feels like dating but neither person has agreed out loud that it is a relationship, which is exactly what makes it hard to leave and hard to name.
What are the signs you're in a situationship?
You only make plans last minute. You have never met their friends. Conversations about where this is going get changed or deflected. It feels close in private and undefined in public. And when someone asks what you two are, you change the subject.
Why do situationships hurt so much?
Because the connection is real while the commitment is not, so a breakup you are told does not count still lands like grief. There is no anniversary to delete and no label to mourn, which can make the hurt feel invisible and confusing.
How do you end a situationship?
Name it plainly, once, and ask for what you want. If the answer is more deflection, that is the answer. Ending it is less about a dramatic exit and more about refusing to keep accepting undefined as a permanent status.
Can a situationship turn into a real relationship?
Sometimes, but only when the ambiguity ends on purpose, not by drifting. If one person keeps it undefined to avoid choosing, waiting rarely changes it. A direct conversation is what reveals whether there is a relationship underneath or just inertia.
