Strong vs Weak Day Master in Saju (Singang · Sinyak)

Strong (신강, 身強 singang) and weak (신약, 身弱 sinyak) describe how much backup your day master gets from the other seven characters in your saju chart. Not a score, not a grade — a description of the company one character keeps.

What "strong" and "weak" mean in saju

Strength measures support, not quality. A saju chart holds eight characters across four pillars; one of them — the heavenly stem of the day pillar — is the day master, standing in for you. The other seven either back it up or ask something of it. Support outweighing demand reads strong (singang); demand outweighing support reads weak (sinyak); the two sitting close reads balanced (중화 junghwa), which is common.

A weak day master is not a weak person. 身 means "self," so 신약 reads as "lightly supported in this chart," not as a claim about willpower. What makes a day master read strong

Four factors push a chart toward strong, weighted rather than counted:

1. Month-branch support (득령 deukryeong) — the birth season favoring the day master's element. Heaviest weight of the four: a Wood day master born in spring starts strong.
2. Rooting (통근 tonggeun) — the day master's element hiding inside the branches, especially the one directly beneath it.
3. Same-element company (득세 deukse) — other characters sharing the day master's element (peers) or generating it (resource).
4. Hidden stems surfacing (투출 tuchul) — a hidden element also appearing openly as a stem, making that root count for more.

What makes a day master read weak

A chart reads weak when the other seven characters mostly draw on the day master rather than feed it:

• Off-season month. A Wood day master born deep in autumn — Metal's season — gets no seasonal backing. Month weight cuts both ways.
• Draining company. Output and wealth elements consume the day master: what it produces, what it manages. Plenty of both means spending more than it takes in.
• Controlling company. The element regulating the day master applies pressure; heavy authority with little resource to soften it pulls firmly toward sinyak.
• No roots. Nothing hidden in the branches leaves no reserve, however busy the stems above look.

None of this is damage — a chart heavy in output and wealth simply has a lot going on, and asks for deliberate refilling.

Strong day masters tend to read as self-propelled — comfortable deciding alone, slow to ask for help, steady under pressure. Charts like this do better with an outlet than with more support: creative work, a demanding project, responsibility that absorbs the surplus.

Weak day masters tend to read as collaborative and permeable — attuned to the room, good at borrowing strength, quicker to feel depleted. Charts like this do better with resource and allies: mentors, structure, recovery time, people who refill rather than draw down.

Tendencies, not rules. Strength describes what a chart is asking for, and both answers are ordinary.

The ten gods (sipseong): five relationships, ten roles

The ten gods (십성, 十星 sipseong) are the roles the other characters play relative to the day master. Five relationships, each split yin and yang, gives ten. Same polarity reads direct and unfiltered; opposite polarity reads more workable.

Peer and resource sit on the support side of the strength calculation; output, wealth, and authority sit on the demand side. That split is what turns the ten gods into a strength reading.

How strength and the ten gods shape a reading together

Two people with the same day master read differently because the ten gods around it are arranged differently. Take two Yang Wood (甲) charts. One, born in spring among resource and peers: strong, best served by an outlet. The other, born in autumn under heavy authority with no roots: weak, best served by support before more demand.
